Body Painting on a Sheet

It has been so hot recently that I haven't been able to do this activity with L because his bear feet would be scorched, however, today we are having a BIT of a cooler summer day and so we did
some body painting on a sheet! Get ready for a mess! But cleanup is simple and fun--just let them run through the sprinkler!

     What you'll need
old or new sheet
washable paints
paper plates/plastic or tin pans (just something to put the paint on and let them step in it)

*Try to remember to let this be open ended art. Let them explore with dipping different body parts into the paint and then onto the sheet. They may even get rocks or sticks and dip and paint with them as well! All this fosters creativity and should not be discouraged.

Lawson's Sheet Painting Experience

Tada! (you can see that mommy got in on it a bit too) hehe

When this dried, I cut out some of the feet and hand prints that I wanted to keep and then glued them onto a piece of construction paper. After that dried I framed it. I loved that I got a piece that had my footprint and Lawson's footprint side by side. :)

Such fun!

  1. When my kids girls were small (4-6) we did something similar except we used permanent fabric paint. I squirted the paint into a shallow pand and they would step in the pan and walk on the sheets and pillowcases. We let the paint dry, washed the sheets and gave them to their grandparents for Christmas. My girs are now 21 and 22 and both set of grandparents still have those sets of sheets. Aside from the kids themselves, I think these are the best gifts we ever gave them :)

  2. I just found your website and already sent the web address to three mommies! I was wondering, does the paint wash off the driveway?

I hope to try this very soon!! You have amazing ideas! Thank you!!

  3. We just did this (my daughter is 2 1/2) and she loved it! I used butcher paper instead of a sheet since I had some available, and then it dried quicker and I can cut up what I want more easily. I also had a 5 gallon bucket of water next to it for washing off (before the sprinklers...) and she loved playing in that as well. She'd go back and forth between splashing in the bucket and painting. Thanks for the great idea!

  6. I ran across your blog whilst listening to the Wailing Jennys ("Glory Bound" to be exact). Needless to say, the beauty of it left me wiping a tear from my cheek. They grow up so fast, don't they?
Again, what a simply sentimental chunk of time gone by captured in a frame.

Beautiful. Looking forward to reading more of your stuff.

Take care, be good and take it all in.period

  7. Thanks for sharing this idea - we used it to make a mat for our tiny tots group at church.

  8. This is so innovative. It was easy to apply the paint I used, it dried fairly quickly, didn't crack or clump and looked good. It definitely exceeded my expectations.

  9. Just did this today with my 17 month old. She had a blast and the cat got in on it too. (Not so much the cats idea). We add glitter to ours. My driveway is very sparkly now. Thanks for all the great ideas!
