Rainbow Sensory Bin

Sensory Bin

I used neon rainbow aquarium gravel for the base filler, but noticed it didn't contain any red so I threw in a bit of our homemade colored rice, which you can see how to make HERE
I saved this mix afterward for many more sensory activities to come!

I then searched our toys and craft supplies for brightly colored objects to include in the bin. I don't often do such busy and packed bins, but this one was such fun to create and I do so many simple bins with the kids, that I thought it would be nice to give them something a bit different this time.

I actually left this one out on a sheet for days.
There were so many objects for the kids to discover, that it kept their attention for quite a while. It also gave lots of opportunity to identify the names and colors of objects with my youngest (19 mo).

Caution
Always use proper vigilance and precaution when younger children are exploring with this sensory material, and use your parental discretion when deciding if this or any activity is right for your child based on their age and developmental abilites.

  1. Your sensory bins are *great* - thanks for posting all the ideas. I love the rainbow connection to St Patty's Day...

One question for you, though. How/where do you store these? I'm assuming the bins don't "stay out" or get put away whole, but I'm wondering if you keep track of them or just bag up the rice/gravel part to reuse? and then return the toys to the room?

Also, do you buy stuff specifically for the bins or just reuse what you have?

    Thanks!

  2. I love this rainbow tub idea! I teach pre-K and we just finished up our rainbow/weather unit. I did a sensory tub with rainbow rice as the base, but I love the idea of the aquarium rocks! Great blog, thanks for sharing!
