Color Cubes

These pretty cubes kept "L" quite busy and content on this hot summer day!

1. ice cube tray
2. food coloring
3. water

I probably don't need to explain but just in case:
1. fill your ice cube tray with water and add a few drops of food coloring
2. freeze

This was my 2nd batch. The first batch had yellow which i'll make brighter next time by adding more food coloring.

I gathered up all the glass bowls and a few glass cups I had and filled them with water. I set these out on our patio with the color cubes in a separate bowl. L dropped the color cubes into the bowls of water and watched the colors spread out and color the water as they melted. After all his cubes were melted, he loved dumping the different colors of water into a different bowl and mixing the colors. Afterward he just enjoyed playing in the water.

  1. I love this idea better than the ice cubes in the tub like I have seen elsewhere. Thanks. :)

  2. Great idea I love those bowls as well where to get them?!

  3. Do the kids get stained from the food coloring?

  4. I've also seen using colored ice cubes for 'painting' on paper! Just an idea

  5. yes, my question was going to be if L got stained while playing? This is such a great idea, but I don't want my son walking around all discolored afterwards, though it would be quite a show

  6. Yes, the food coloring did stain the hands a bit, but not for long. We did recently make colored ice cubes using Koolaid though and it didn't stain at all! http://www.playcreateexplore.com/2012/07/kool-aid-colored-ice-cubes.html

  7. I LOVE this idea, thank you so much!! Going to try it out tomorrow:-)

  8. Ice cubes are a big chocking hazard

    1. They're also a choking hazard, but this page is about a little boy being watched by his mother, not playing alone.

  9. I think this is a great idea and they can drink it too
