Kitchen Utility Paper Activity & Exploration

As 3 different pots and pans bubbled and popped on the stove, my bored toddler clung to my leg and pulled at my shirt. As I thought to myself "Ahhh, I'm going nuts!" I knew I needed to think of something fast and easy! So, I reached into the drawer where I keep the tin foil, saran wrap, wax paper, and cling wrap, and pulled off a big piece of each one and laid it out for L.  As he unwrapped his arms from my legs I cried "I'm free!"and off he went to explore these new objects!..and  of course I snapped a few pictures in between the hectic dinner rush...which is why some of the pics below are kinda blurry.

Even if you JUST have aluminum foil, it will be enough to keep your child entertained and interested for a bit! Aluminum foil is remarkably squeezable and makes great sound effects! They can stomp on it, squeeze it into a ball, unwrap it again, tear it up, etc.

The wax paper, and saran wrap were a hit too! He liked the way the wax paper crunched when he balled it up, and he had fun sticking the saran wrap to things in the kitchen.

Kinda blurry, but here he is twisting the saran wrap

Stomping the tin foil bc he liked the crackling sound

Try This: Foil can be wrapped around all sorts of objects, or bent into sculptured shapes, or even fingerpainted upon!

  1. I just found your blog and I love the idea of the aluminum foil. I will have a house full of kindergarteners for spring break, I can not wait to see what they will do with it.

  2. This is genius! Especially the foil. I can't believe I have an almost 6 year old and we haven't created with foil!

  3. I am inspired to combine 2 of your projects... aluminum foil.... and crayons on hot plate! I am guessing that if you heat a plate and put foil on it, the crayons will melt on the foil.... I think it would look cool! You could use smooth foil or crinkled for different effects.

    1. You can take crayon shavings and place them between two pieces of wax paper and iron it and make a stained glass effect instead of using foil.
