Birdseed Sensory Bin

We've been spending so many of our afternoons just lounging in the yard. On this warm sunny spring day I eyed my big bag of birdseed in the garage and thought it would make a neat sensory bin material that we haven't tried before, so I dumped it in a big bucket and gave L a bunch of containers and utensils to play with.

I even put B (7 months) in the bucket to see what he would do! I loomed over him like a hawk in case he scooped up a handful to put in his mouth, and he did try a few times, but eventually he stopped trying and was fascinated by the way the birdseed flowed through his fingers everytime he grabbed some. He also loved pushing his little toes into it.
With great vigilance, some sensory bins are entirely possible at this age!

  1. I love your blog. I don't know how you come up with these fun activities. I'm expecting a baby boy in May and hope you are still blogging when he is old enough to do these activities! Keep it up!

  3. Oh I love this!! Stopping by from it's playtime :) I have a 7 month old too and have/am looking forward to all the fun sensory bins I can create when he's older. I've been wanting to try something like this but I'm so afraid we'll battle over what can/can't go in his mouth lol. Encouraging to see it done though! Looks like he had fun.

  4. What fun!

I'll just make sure we get birdseed WITHOUT dried grubs. My daughters once made pinecone birdfeeders with a mix that included them.
