Have you ever seen such an enormous tadpole?! It's a bullfrog tadpole and I just adore them! I've been really wanting to find some and when my friend told me she knew where some were, well, not many days later I was thigh high in the muckiest, slimiest, snake and alligator snapping turtle infested pond ever, with a tiny net catching these things for me and 5 other friends who came with us to the pond hoping to find some for their kiddos.
The problem being that no one wanted to get in to get them...except me and another mama! We came accross 3 snakes (less than a foot away from our own feet!) but we just couldn't disappoint the kiddos! After an hour or so we managed to catch one for each family!

Yes, thats me in the pond...in a skirt, being pulled out of thigh high mud after catching one!
The things we do for our kids! haha
After just a few days, our tadpole developed it's front legs! Aren't he just adorable?!
I think we'll only keep him a few days longer and then release him in the lake nearby. I'm not a huge fan of keeping animals in captivity very long. If we find frogs, turtles, bugs, etc. we usually only do "sleepovers" and keep them for one night, but I really couldn't resist this amazing observational opportunity for L. I love watching him too!

This is AWESOME! I would have totally gotten in the muck too ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing opportunity!
ReplyDeleteMake sure to release it back where you found it. Bullfrogs are voracious eaters and you don't want to introduce it into a water body that doesn't already have them!
ReplyDeleteThanks to twitter and to @Teach_Preschool for the link the brought me to this wonderful resource. Children really respond to this kind of learning.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this on Saturday Show and Tell. This activity would also fit into my summer activities list for Toddlers (http://www.cheeriosandlattes.com/summer-activities-for-toddlers/). Check it out and feel free to post any other activities that would fit. I love your creativity.

Tadpole? I thought it was a dill pickle! I love your blog, BTW. I'm gonna use these ideas on my 10 mo.
ReplyDeleteThat lil' dude is too cute! Actually... let me rephrase. Those lil' dudes, the pickle and the wee man, are adorable! I got a lil' man invading my space every weekend, and discovering your blog is an absolute a- ha!! moment. So much stuff I can bombard him with! The more I get him knackered the longer I get to sleep in on Sundays. Now, where to find tadpoles...
ReplyDeleteI think its awesome with the sleepover ideas. Learning is important but so is respecting other lifeforms and what's best for them.:)
