When I have the time (and I don't know how I find it!) I like to make homemade toys or games for L. This was super duper simple and he finds all sorts of play uses for it.
I went to hobby lobby and was looking for large wooden spools but couldn't find any, so I settled for these round wooden wheel looking things with holes in the middle. I then painted 8 of them 3 different colors so he could work on matching and patterns. I took a long piece of yarn and taped one end so he could thread the holes easily and then glued a jingle bell to the other end.
It took him a while to figure out how to thread it, but he got the hang of it and its so cute to watch him concentrate so hard to get it in the hole and pull it through the other side. He's working on his fine motor skills for sure! Even the blocks themselves can be played with. He stacks them...sorts them by color...counts them, etc. It's a simple toy with a lot of learning benefits :)
