Sponge Painting

Fun, cheap, and easy...thats what this is. L loved it!

I covered our kitchen table with paper, cut out some shapes from large sponges, and filled a few bowls with washable paint.

it was really cool when he started dipping the sponges into more than one color at once.

 This is when I couldn't resist getting in on the action. 

and like every paint project we do...the end result is just a big ole smeared blob.

Which is FINE with me, because.....

He just has so much darn fun doing it!

Homemade Silly Putty

This is a pretty basic messy art recipe.

Silly putty is easy to make, and the homemade kind is more fun than the silly putty you used to get in the quarter machines that was in that little peach egg looking thing.

What You Need

4 tablespoons liquid starch

8 tablespoons of white school glue

Your choice of food coloring

Mix all ingredients in a small bowl.

Stir a bit, then let set for 5 minutes.

Start working it by hand and it will firm up 

Have fun!

What's nice about silly putty is that yes its sticky but its actually not THAT messy.

It's really easy to peel off of your skin and whatever's left can be easily washed off with warm water.

It also saves for a long time in an airtight container or ziplock bag.

* I haven't yet tried to wash that white shirt above on L, however a friend has informed me that it does not easily wash out of clothing!

Christmas Themed Shaving Cream Sensory Bin

I can only go a few days without some good ole fashioned messy fun with L.

I've been wanting to do a Christmas themed sensory bin, but because we love messy projects and it had been a few days since our last one, I brought out the shaving cream as a little twist.

Started with a plastic tub of shaving cream (2 cans)

First I added a bit of white glitter and peppermint extract so it sparkled like snow,

and smelled like Christmas!

I sprinkled a few jingle bells and Christmas buttons then mixed them in for suprise finds.

You can mix in lots of different Christmas decor that can easily be washed off and used again, such as bows and shatterproof ornaments!

I put down a plastic table cloth and  then I let him free to play!

I gave him some red and green glitter to add and mix as he pleased.

Children really love having a bucket of water to clean their hands. It also serves as part of the fun.

L made Christmas Soup!  He also used the water to clean off his Christmas Treasure that he'd find in the shaving cream.

Fun with Goop

We are no strangers to Messy Art and thanks to Mary Ann Kohl's books and specifically The Big Messy Art Book, we always have tons of ideas readily on hand for lots of fun!

We made GOOP this evening and let me tell you....I had just as much fun as L did! L literally sat for 2 hours playing with this stuff which would make it the longest single activity he's ever done. He absolutely loved this stuff!  My brother and husband couldn't even resist playing in it.

When you squeeze the GOOP, it feels like a solid, but when you release your hand it becomes a liquid instantly. Seriously, its lots of fun to play with!

What you Need

1 Box (1 lb) Cornstarch

2 cups of water

Food coloring *optional*

I ended up adding another half a box of cornstarch for what I thought made the coolest consistency. Its not exact science. Play around with it and find the consistency you like.

What to Do

1. Dump the entire box of cornstarch into a plastic bin or tin pan

2. add the water and cornstarch

3. Mix by hand

4. Add foodcoloring if you want

Don't let this scare you! A warm rag works wonders on this stuff and it cleans up easily!

It washes off of hands easily too.
