After deciding to stop straightening my naturally curly hair, and receiving these 10 Amazing Tips for Curly Hair, I have been shampoo-free (no-poo) for a few months now and I am absolutely loving my curls! I've been using a Homemade Baking Soda Curly Hair Cleanse in place of shampoo and it has made the world of difference in my curls!
In my shampoo days, my main curly hair complains were
1. That with my hair being longer, the weight of my curls caused the crown of my head to be less curly so it was straighter at the top, more curly on the bottom
2. How much product I had to use in my hair to get it looking "decent" and then there was always the dilemma of the fine line between not using enough product and having frizzy hair, or using too much and having "crunchy' curls, or an over product look of wetness...not good.
Homemade Curly Hair Cleanse Recipe
1 quart of boiling water + 1/4 cup baking soda
Stir and let cool
I found the recipe HERE, at On Just a Couple Acres. Visit this wonderful blog for more natural curly hair care and other lovely wonderful things! |
The biggest differences i've noticed since going no-poo and using this homemade curly hair cleanse are...
1. My hair is curling better on the top..more volume
2. I'm having to use MUCH less product to get it to look "good"
3. I can go much longer between washes without it looking oily
4. My hair looks thicker and fuller!
Not that my curls are necessarily beautiful, but I am finally SO content with them, that I feel like when I look in the mirror, I DON'T HATE THEM...I LOVE THEM (well, most of the time)!
and THAT is a beautiful thing!
I've had a lot of questions about using this mixture for on straight hair. I honestly don't know how it would work for other hair types. This shampoo and even going No Poo also may not be the right thing for all curly hair types either, although many have had success with both!
Here though, i'm simply stating my experience and own opinion, although if you try it I do hope it works as well for you!
Tips on How to Use
-I squirt only my scalp area all over the top and then massage my scalp. Then I rinse and let the cleanse run down the rest of my hair. This gets it plenty clean and keeps the ends from becoming too dry.
CONDITIONING
-I've also started using an apple cider vinegar hair rinse, which works great as a conditioner and makes my hair shiny! Using JUST the baking soda cleanse can leave your hair dry if you don't condition, so It also balances out my hair's PH.
It's super easy and is just 1 part apple cider vinegar to 1 part water. While showering, just spritz on your hair after using your shampoo, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse.

You're too hard on yourself. Your curls ARE beautiful! : )
ReplyDeleteI think you have gorgeous hair!! You could easily be a model.
ReplyDeleteI've been doing baking soda washes for a year and a half now and love them, but I ALWAYS follow up with an apple cider vinegar rinse. From all I've read, you really, really do want to do a follow-up ACV rinse to balance out your hair's Ph after having baking soda put on it. The combination of BaSO wash and ACV rinse leaves my hair clean and nicely conditioned (but of course I still use silicone-free rinse out and leave-in conditioners). Plus it makes my curls really POP!
ReplyDeleteRead the book "Curly Girl" By Loraine Massey. It is a whole book about how to take care of curly hair. My curls have been great and I havent used shampoo in 3 years. Also using the juice of one lemon with your normal amount of conditioner works great to clean hair. Don't use terry cloth towels on your hair. I noticed the quickest change in fuzzieness once I changed to microfiber and t-shirt material towels for my hair.
ReplyDeleteOk, this may be a really dumb question, but I'm so intrigued by being able to have some volume at the scalp instead of flat scalp & pyramid curls: do you apply this baking soda mix in the shower then rinse out?
ReplyDeleteLauren, no question is dumb! Yes, I have the mixture in a pump bottle so I pump it on my scalp then massage it in really well and then rinse. It really does give your curls at the top a great lift!
ReplyDeleteI recently also used BaSo wash then followed with Acv & loved the results. I used 1tsp in 1c water for the rinse. Left hair clean & soft. While still damp I applied a tiny amount of organic extra virgin coconut oil on ends of hair then worked up to my scalp. My hair absorbed it & I styled it in the morning. ..loved the results
ReplyDeleteAwesome, thanks! With your hair already wet or still dry? How much do you think you use? (I know, I over-complicate things!) :) TIA!
ReplyDeleteWith hair already wet for Acv & coconut oil also but towel dry but damp..I use penny size on palm ..it'll melt as you rub hands together & just apply from ends to top :)
ReplyDeleteSorry, I was referring to the baking soda mix. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks anonymous! Can't wait to try the bsr and acv. Have wanted to try coconut oil on my hair too!
ReplyDeleteafter the ACV rinse, do you use conditioner? I feel like my hair would be a rats nest if I didn't use conditioner...
ReplyDeletethe ACV is a fantastic conditioner when it follows a baking soda wash... I have long thick curly hair and was afraid of the same, haven't used conditioner, just baking soda and (organic) ACV and my hair is fantastic! Also, I used to have shinning red hair until I used product after product after product... using just these two things my natural hair color has come back with a vengeance! :)
DeleteI always had a curly hair ever since. I tried different brands of shampoo and other hair treatments but only a few can do wonder to my hair. I will try this homemade shampoo this week.
ReplyDeleteI'm in week two of this and I can't believe how well my hair has been behaving :) Not sure if this is a "honeymoon period" but it really is amazing! I didn't have as big a squirt bottle to use, so I made a smaller batch. 2 cups of hot water and abt 3 tablespoons of baking soda. I use it as described in the Tips on How to Use section of the original post. I've shampooed once during the week (which I may continue to do at least for now). I'm very happy and have had so many compliments! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks! My hair's naturally wavy on top and curly at the bottom, but in webcam, it looks so unmanageable! I had to cut it short just to make it look neat on video chat. Now that my hair grew back, I tried this one and it works (well, most of the time). Thanks!
ReplyDeleteFor those using the acv rinse: does this leave your hair smelling like vinegar? If so, how do you combat the small?
ReplyDeleteI use just plain ol Org ACV and the smell washes down the drain in a minute or two, if you want to, of course adding essential oils wouldn't hurt :)
DeleteU can use a herbal tea in place of water.
Deleteonce it dries, the smell disappears. Depending on how much vinegar you use, you'll probably still smell a bit vinegary for a while. I do, but then again, I use a stronger solution than here, but once my hair is all dry, you can't smell anything
DeleteI don't think so. The tea tree and peppermint oils in the recipe I use (same site that PCE linked to) seem to cover the scent.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this! I've been looking for hair beauty tips everywhere on the net!
ReplyDeleteWould love to try this. My hair has just enough waves that I have to use a flat iron to straighten it, or really use products and scrunch scrunch scrunch to get it not to look so messy. My hair is colored though, so could I use this baking soda & ACV rinse also? Would it strip the color out?
ReplyDeleteWhere can you buy the pump bottle? and how often do you wash your hair?
ReplyDeleteKim, I bought the pump bottle at the dollar store and I wash my hair once or twice a week.
ReplyDeleteIs this safe for colored hair?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your advices. I will surely use the baking soda, boiled water solution.
ReplyDeleteIm currently doing the no poo thing and loving it, except that I have a loy of static electricity in my hair. I cannot find anything on how to avoid it?
ReplyDeleteI have recently started the "no poo" journey and it is fantastic. I too have curly hair and this made all the difference in the world. If you haven't yet, you MUST try the apple cider vinegar and water mixture for conditioner. Good luck with your "no poo" journey!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was pregnant and researching cloth diapering, I wanted to try all the different kinds out. I bought one or two of nearly everything: different brands of prefolds, all sorts of All-In-Ones, pocket diapers with snaps, pockets with velcro, etc etc!
ReplyDeleteI color my hair often - and my hair is also really dry and damaged from the coloring sometimes. I've tried so many different shampoos-color, moisturizing, damage repair, curly, and they all pale in comparison to the Shielo Hydrating Shampoo. The Shielo Shampoo really brought out my hair color and made my hair not just shiny but shimmery! After using when you dry your hair, it still smelled so fresh and clean, like I just walked out of the salon.
ReplyDeleteDo you put baking soda on wet or dry hair?? Thanks
ReplyDeleteAwesome article..And today I read this article from a site which sounds great http://healthcarewell.com/hair-care-treatments/

ReplyDeleteAny thoughts on if washing 3-4x per week is too much? I work out and HAVE to wash my hair afterward because of how much I sweat.
ReplyDeleteCan you add some EO for good smells to the baking soda hair cleanse? I also have curls...
ReplyDeleteDo you use the Baking soda wash mixture when hair is dry before wetting it in the shower? or should hair already be wet before massaging it into scalp? thanks!
