2 Candy Experiments: Melting and Dissolving

We used some of our Halloween candy
for 2 easy experiments involving MELTING AND DISSOLVING.

Dissolving Skittles
We sorted our Skittles into color piles and then dissolved them into glasses of hot water.

Melted Gummy Bears
and then we took our Gummy Bears and put them on a paper plate to melt them in the microwave.
L really liked watching the bears melt haha!

I gave him a few q-tips to play around in the gummy goo before it hardened.

Each activity provided a great opportunity to talk about MELTING AND DISSOLVING and the way that HEAT affected our candy to change it.

  1. Hi, I love all of these ideas, but all the ones I tried with my 2 year old son, he plays with for about 2 minutes and is done! Is he still too little maybe?

  2. I don't think I've ever tried melting gummi bears into goo. I'll have to do it. But it is really fun to put them in water and watch them swell.

When I do candy experiments with little kids, I just let them unwrap candy, drop it in water, and stir. Sometimes they like watching the colors change, but mostly they enjoy the unwrapping and stirring. Once my son filled up a bowl of water with candy until it nearly overflowed, making "candy soup."

  4. Standing in front of a microwave while it is on is not safe- it emits radon rays which cause cancer.
