Recycled Paper Christmas Ornaments

I made these Recycled Paper Christmas Ornaments with the help of my 2 year old. They are fun and easy to make and I'm always a fan of "green" projects.

What You Need
1.Paper (newspaper, construction paper, scrapbook paper, crepe paper, etc.)
2.Water
3.Small cookie cutter
4.Blender

What you Do

1. Lay a dry cloth on a plate then lay a paper towel on the cloth.
Lay a cookie cutter on the paper towel.

2. Tear your paper up in small pieces (newspaper, construction paper, scrapbook paper, crepe paper, or a mix of them etc). Until you have a few cups of paper pieces.

3. Put your paper in a blender and add a cup of water.

4. Blenderize the paper/water mix until you have a thick pulp. You may need to add paper or add water depending on if your pulp is too watery or too dry.

5. Strain the water out of the pulp with a sieve, by putting it in a washcloth and squeezing it, or simply squishing (very technical term lol) it in your hands.

6. Place the strained pulp in your cookie cutter and mash it down (another very technical term) making sure the edges are defined.

7. Sprinkle with glitter if you'd like

8. CAREFULLY press your star onto a cookie sheet and bake at 200 degrees for about 2 hours. (If your star falls off when transferring, you can start over by putting a bit of water on the pulp then molding it in the cookie cutter again.

 Tips!
  • Thinner layers of pulp work best. If you've put a lot of pulp into the cookie cutter its harder to transfer onto the cookie cutter without it falling apart AND they take longer to bake.

  • The end result is a dry, compacted, and lightweight star ornament. You can hot glue any broken pieces back on at this point. Use a glue gun to add some ribbon on the back for hanging the star.

  1. I have been playing with paper pulp of sorts for a year now and this is the first I heard of baking it! ,!! It's safe? Do you add glue and salt to your mixture? Ours take tooo long to dry cuz we live in moist basement, I'm wondering if baking is THE KEY for our Chrustmas ornaments this year!?!?!
